The Lounsbury House, located in downtown Ridgefield, is a Community Center that hosts various activities and events throughout the year. The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, a non-collecting contemporary art gallery founded in 1964, is located in a former grocery and hardware store built in 1783. Downtown Ridgefield also boasts local shops, cafes, antique stores, and one of the town’s parks -- Ballard Green.

Many of Ridgefield’s historic buildings and landmarks have been revitalized over the years to compliment the area’s appreciation of history, arts, and culture. The Ridgefield Playhouse, built in the 1930’s, was renovated and restored not long ago, and the community can once again enjoy plays, musical performances, movies, and community events in this historic facility. The Ridgefield Theater Barn, located in a converted dairy barn, has been producing performances and workshops for more than 40 years. The Cass Gilbert Fountain, located along Main Street, is a well-known landmark that was also recently rebuilt.
The Elms Inn, which opened in 1799, offers 18 period rooms and suites designed with antique furnishings and modern amenities. The Inn also features the Elms Restaurant & Tavern, one of only three Connecticut restaurants to receive an “Excellent” Rating from The New York Times. With acclaimed Chef Brenden Walsh in the kitchen, guests can enjoy spectacular American and New England cuisine. Ridgefield also provides residents with diverse dining opportunities such as French Bistro, Thai, Asian fusion, Tex-Mex, and Italian.

Founded in the early 1700’s, Ridgefield was a small town located along the stagecoach route between New York City and Boston. The Battle of Ridgefield, which is the only land battle on Connecticut soil during the Revolution, was fought in 1777 not far off Main Street near where the Elms Inn stands. An American force of approximately 600 men set up a barricade and tried to hold off the British. Several monuments, including one in front of The Elms Inn, are erected around the town to honor the men whose brave efforts are still remembered.
